Major League Baseball wished for something. Major League Baseball got what it wished for. And a whole lot more.
Not just MLB itself but the fans and, especially, the baseball media got way more than they bargained for.
As we watch the fall from grace of one baseball player after another, we seem to forget the reason the Steroid Witch Hunt began. So let me remind you all why it did begin and who everyone was really after.
I think we know who everyone wanted to see crucified in the Steroid Scandal. It was Barry Bonds. While the fans and media fell in love with Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, no one wanted to see Bonds top McGwire's feat. Somehow, the baseball world equaled breaking Roger Maris' record to mean that McGwire was some great ambassador for the game. And McGwire helped instill that fantasy into everyone's mind when he woudl go out of his way to suck up to the media while he talked about how he was in awe of himself.
In reality, McGwire was just as much of a pompous, arrogant jerk as Bonds was. Just ask anyone whom tried to get a McGwire autograph when the cameras weren't around. The problem is that Bonds refused to be a fake for the cameras. While McGwire made sure to be as phony as possible, so long as that made him a hero.
And it worked....
When Bonds broke McGwire's record, he didn't get near the red carpet treatment that McGwire got. Instead, he got bombarded immediately with accusations of cheating. 'Roiding. People went so far as to say that if Barry broke McGwire's record, they would refuse to acknowledge it and that in their minds, McGwire would still be the king.
Wait....what? McGwire was 'roiding too? OOPS!
Well, those Bonds Haters did get part of what they wanted. Barry's legacy is indeed tainted in this steroid issue. But, what the Bonds Haters weren't counting on is how many people Barry would take down with him. They were hoping that Barry was the only one doing it and that they could just asterisk every Barry accomplishment and keep their golden child McGwire in the record books.
Now, it seems that every new golden child they want to crown ends up with the exact same stigma. Nope, can't call ARod your golden child anymore. He, too, is as guilty as Barry Bonds of juicing.
Each time we hear a new name come out, I just think of all those people 6,7 or 8 yeras ago who acted like Barry Bonds was the only one doing it. Who hated Barry so much that they went after this tooth and nail to make sure they beheaded him with their Steroid Guillotine. And now I wonder what they think as they see the guys they did like get marched up that same ramp and have to get the same treatment.
Those people who wanted to see Barry Bonds brought down got what they wanted. But I wonder if they got more than what they wanted.
